Audience Engagement Research - Sports Illustrated

Image
Sports Illustrated is also a sports related magazine that has a wide distribution that I hope to reach as I want more people to be educated about circus. Sports Illustrated's readers are passionate about all kinds of sports and I want readers like that as well. For their distribution, Sports Illustrated is able to reach their audience in number of ways besides just through the actual magazine itself. The main ways they interact with their readers is through their website and hosting events. . Their website features articles about every sport you could ever want to read about. Also on the website, they have scores for current games; as well as past records. According to their records, since they have improved their website, user interaction has increased by 32%. The expansion has introduced over 6 million new users to Sports Illustrated.  Sports Illustrated also hosts many events centered around sports to get their audience excited about them. For instance, every time there...

Indesign Class Activity

Image
Today in class we utilized Adobe InDesign to help layout our two page spread. Mr. Elsbree gave us a lesson on all the different tools available to us in the program. The layout of Indesign is much easier to use than photoshop in my opinion. Its much more user friendly too, seeing as things are clearly labeled. In the beginning, I felt kind of overwhelmed at first, but as I continued to use the software I got more and more comfortable. I think I am going to redo some of of my pages in Indesign. I feel like they look more professional now then they did in photoshop.

My Target Audience

My target audience is the circus community, as well as people who want to learn more about circus world. I'd say the average reader is probably in the 18-24 range, could be any gender. I want my magazine to be readily available to anyone who wants to read it. Many circus artists don't make a ton of money, so I want to make sure they're still able to have access. I also need to make sure its readily available everywhere, seeing as circuses travel often. My magazine will be appealing to my audience because there are not many circus-focused publications readily available. The fact that I have a new product for them that is solely based on their passion will excite them.

Feedback and Revisions

The feedback I got from my teacher and class on my midterm submission was majority positive. They said they liked how my cover photo was brightly colored and said that it grabbed their eye. Also, they said that they liked the way the cover was set up as I had little article blurbs advertising what was inside. As for revisions, I plan to make more effective use of my white space. By structuring my pages a little bit differently I could make my information stand out even more. I also want to change the background for my table of contents because my teacher told me it wasn't really conventional to have a solid color background other than white. Its also very expensive to do a full page in color. I also want to get more photos if I have the opportunity to.

Use of Conventions

My magazine uses many conventions of my genre. The cover features the title in large font so the reader can clearly recognize my magazine and get their attention. The cover also features one large picture which is standard for most magazines, and it was focused on the main article topic of my magazine. Additionally, I also have little blurbs for my other articles in order to draw the reader in. The table of contents is also very standard, I tried to keep it fairly simple and organized to make it easy for the reader. For my article, I kept it pretty professional and tried to keep bias out of it.

Midterm Submission

For my magazine, I wanted to keep it simple but still impactful. The one image on the cover makes a statement without taking away from the articles. In the table of contents, I used two images only because I didn't want to give away everything that was going to be in the magazine. The articles I chose reflected a wide variety of circus related topics, which I believe shows variety within my magazine. The main article I chose to write is about the Sailor Circus which is very close to my heart. I felt that if I wrote about something that Im passionate about, it would allow me to create the best product possible.

Magazine Production - Schedule Photoshoot

For my photo shoots, I plan for them to take place during practices and shows for circus mainly. I went to the Chalk Festival before I made this post but had planned on using it even before writing about it. So from the festival i have some good quality pictures. As for the ones from the arena, I have practice almost everyday so I try to get at least a few photos a week from different acts practicing. Shows are from December 27th to the 30th and I plan to take a ton of pictures then as well. The different acts, costumes, and lighting will allow for a great variety of shots.
