Midterm Submission

For my magazine, I wanted to keep it simple but still impactful. The one image on the cover makes a statement without taking away from the articles. In the table of contents, I used two images only because I didn't want to give away everything that was going to be in the magazine. The articles I chose reflected a wide variety of circus related topics, which I believe shows variety within my magazine. The main article I chose to write is about the Sailor Circus which is very close to my heart. I felt that if I wrote about something that Im passionate about, it would allow me to create the best product possible.

Magazine Production - Schedule Photoshoot

Image
For my photo shoots, I plan for them to take place during practices and shows for circus mainly. I went to the Chalk Festival before I made this post but had planned on using it even before writing about it. So from the festival i have some good quality pictures. As for the ones from the arena, I have practice almost everyday so I try to get at least a few photos a week from different acts practicing. Shows are from December 27th to the 30th and I plan to take a ton of pictures then as well. The different acts, costumes, and lighting will allow for a great variety of shots.

Magazine Production - Scouting Locations for Photo Shoots

Image
I decided to shoot my photos at the Venice Chalk Festival and in/around the Sailor Circus arena. These are the best places to take photos because they have a lot of circus value. The Chalk Festival has a lot of beautiful art that is very visually appealing and since the theme is nature, I think that I could find a few pieces that are related to circus. The arena is really going to be the best places to take pictures though. It has so much circus equipment that can produce a variety of shots, and there's many different locations within the building allowing for a range of lighting and setting options.

Magazine Production - Flat Plan

Image
My plan for my magazine is quite simple. I wanted a variety of articles about different circus topics because I thought it was important to recognize all aspects. For example, I wanted to show that it’s not all about the performance and show aspects, there’s also a lot of serious issues like animal abuse. It was important to cover the dark parts of the circus business too. I also wanted to showcase circus history in addition to what the modern circus is. My articles will keep the readers engaged because the magazine is targeted towards other people in the circus, so they’ll want to keep up with what’s happening.

Magazine Production - Table Of Contents

Image
For my table of contents, I wanted to keep the same theme as my cover page for consistency. In most magazines, the cover and table of contents follow the same theme or at least closely relate. I'm listing the four most important articles, as I think those are what readers are going to be most interested in. The cover of the magazine advertises those four, so it will likely be one of those four articles that drew the reader in. Additionally, it features an "In Every Issue" section, as this also follows magazine conventions. I will include two pictures to showcase two or the articles.

Magazine Production - Cover Template

I decided to name my magazine CircusInternational. I felt like this was a good title because it encompasses a wide variety of topics. Since it is so broad, it gives me the freedom to talk about many different aspects of circus as well as other information about health. It also allows me to discuss topics from all over the world, so I'm not limited to one specific area. I chose the title font because it reminded me of an old school circus advertisement or something you would see on a circus program. The subtext is less elaborate because I still want it to be readable.
